The houses on the main street are now over 100 years old. The village remained with two rows of houses until 1947 then Prefab housing was built on the miners allotments adding to the number of dwellings due to population growth, these allotments were attached to the miners houses, then in the early 1960's the Prefabs were demolished and Tamworth District Council put Council Houses on the land in 1962/4 and they remain today.
The miners houses were built in sections with bricks from Whateley Brick Company, which was based in Rush Lane, near Dosthill a village situated two miles from Piccadilly. The land owner for the colliery and houses was owned by The Peel Estates, Tamworth Staffordshire. Sir Robert Peel, who lived at Drayton Manor near Tamworth, was the founder of the Police Force in England.
When the colliery shaft was sunk in 1898 the owners were The Hockley Hall and Whateley Brickworks and Collieries Limited, the name was changed in 1907 to Kingsbury Collieries Limited. Dexter Colliery was also owned by Kingsbury Collieries Limited the shaft was sunk in 1926. Dexter Colliery situated along Dexter Lane off Knowle Hill Hurley Warwickshire, is a village situated three miles from Piccadilly, was connected to Kingsbury Colliery underground and with a mineral line on the surface. Kingsbury and Dexter Collieries both played a big part in the history of North Warwickshire Coalfields.
Piccadilly being an active mining community formed a social club that was named after Kingsbury Colliery, becoming the hub of the community in that period. The club became a very successful sports club, excelling at football, cricket, tennis and bowls in local area leagues, many shields and cups were won and the whereabouts of these trophies are subject to our ongoing research.
During an unrelated event at our community centre in August 2006, ex-miners were discussing the 40th Anniversary of the closure of Kingsbury Colliery. This discussion led to a group villagers forming a committee starting the long arduous task of fundraising. Our aim to erect a monument to the memory of the miners and mineworkers at Kingsbury and Dexter Collieries.
Part of our fundraising involved the sale of a brick that will have printed upon it the name of some employees of the collieries. These bricks will form the base of the monument
to be built on Trinity Road Piccadilly, for Kingsbury and Dexter Collieries.
